New Inn Community Pub
The New Inn has been trading as a pub in Halse for 300 years, has been through four name changes, numerous owners, an 18th century facelift and now excitingly renovations in 2020/21 to celebrate its new life as a community pub. The New Inn is a perfect example of a friendly, quality English pub we all know and love.
There has been a pub on this site since 1691 but few years in its history have been as dramatic as 2020 when the village got together to save the pub which was facing closure and took it into a new era as a community pub. Over 270 shareholders now each own a part of the pub. For more information follow the link to their website.
Halse Village Hall
Halse Village Hall is a old Tithe Barn which was bought by residents of the village in 1929 and has been used as a community building since that date. The trustees run regular fundraising events, and the number of regular users of the hall include: Halse & District Garden Club, Halse Players, Halse Parish Council, Short Mat Bowls group and the Hapless Sailors Sea Shanty Singers. Regular exercise classes held in the hall include pilates and yoga.
The hall is available for private hire. For more information please follow the link to the village hall website.
St James Church
The earliest record of a church in Halse was in 1150, when Robert Arundel, a Norman baron, gave Halse Manor and church to the order of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as the Hospitallers.
St James The Less has had many alterations since 1150, but the church itself has not seen any extension or major building work for several centuries. The pews, with beautiful locally hand carved pew ends, were installed in the early 1900s, and have the great advantage of being comfortable.
The church is in the Benefice of Ash Priors, Fitzhead, Halse, Langford Budville, Milverton and Runnington. Led by The Rector, Helene Stainer, she is assisted by Sandra Lee and various members of the congregations.
There is nothing stuffy about St James and its congregation, everyone is welcome and is welcomed. Services are a mixture of contemporary with a gentle thread of traditional running through some of them. There are also complete one-offs such as Plough Sunday. The official description is “Mid Church” which really means it is neither high nor low and, effectively, gives the best of all worlds.
St James has a Church Council, who work on all aspects of the church, from buildings and churchyard to services and flower rotas.
